From Periphery to Pivot: Greece’s Emerging Role in the Eastern Mediterranean
Abstract
This presentation examines Greece’s evolving geopolitical role in 2026, highlighting its proactive engagement in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Balkans, and the Middle East. Through strategic military deployments, defence cooperation, energy initiatives, and active advocacy within the EU, Greece demonstrates the characteristics of a middle power influencing regional stability. Key case studies include protection of Cyprus, coordination with Bulgaria, support to Saudi Arabia, maritime security, and the nuclear energy debate. The discussion situates Greece’s actions within broader implications for European security, regional alliances, and the capacity of smaller states to shape international outcomes responsibly.
