Hellenic Diaspora and Orthodox Mission in the South Pacific: Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa

Abstract

This paper examines how the Hellenic diaspora has shaped Orthodox mission in the South Pacific, Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa, within the canonical framework of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Zealand. It argues that diaspora influence is best understood not as cultural export, but as mission infrastructure: an ecclesial capacity that enables worship, catechesis, welfare, and institution building where Orthodoxy previously had little presence. The analysis integrates a diachronic Greek Orthodox missiological lens, grounded in translation, formation, and diakonia, with a synchronic account of contemporary diaspora mobilisation.

The paper traces the emergence of an Orthodox ecosystem, including pastoral breakthroughs, the building of Saint Paraskevi at the Sabeto mission centre in Nadi, early baptisms and catechesis, and the coupling of sacramental life with care for vulnerable persons. These developments are interpreted through Hellenic social principles echoed in diaspora parish life, including filotimo, respect for elders, paideia, and filanthropia, as they are activated through diasporic Hellenic Orthodox parish structures and transnational canonical Orthodox ecclesial networks.
